Sara has purchased a home on the island of Kauai for use as an R&R stopover by veterans who make frequent trips between the U.S. Mainland and Vietnam. She learns that a little girl went missing ten years earlier on Kauai. Strangely, dogs perform a death wail when taken high on the cliffs. Accompanied by a neighbor’s retired forensic dog, Sara wants to learn why they howl mournfully in the forest.
Someone wants the missing child cold case to stay cold. Attempts are made on Sara’s life and continue as she investigates the girl’s disappearance. Sara is near death after her car is forced to roll off the road. Later, she is pushed over a rocky cliff. Dazed and alone at night on a narrow ledge, she discovers a frightful scene. Then the forensic dog leads Sara and the police to a second disgusting site that explodes the case wide open and exposes an elusive murderer’s motives, revenge and victims.

When Sara returns home she goes to Kauai to set up an R & R home for returning veterans and suddenly finds herself thrust into a cold case involving the disappearance of a young girl some years before. When an attempt on her life is made, Sara realizes that the murderer, or person responsible for the young girl’s disappearance, is still on the island and is intent on ensuring she does not find the truth. As more incidents take place, one almost costing the life of her friend, a race begins in which Sara must unmask a killer before she becomes his next victim.
Having read previous books by this author I looked forward to her latest offering, The Howling Cliffs, and I was not disappointed. Ms. Deal delivers again with a clever and intricate long-awaited sequel to River Bones, which begins with Sara Mason working as part of a team seeking the remains of M.I.A. in the hot and steamy highly polluted jungles of Vietnam.
As always, Mary Deal takes us on a visually stunning journey, with vivid descriptions of the beautiful scenery of Kauai, as unlikely a backdrop for murder as you can think of, and also of the ravaged jungles of Vietnam, still, after so many years, trying to recover from the devastating effect of ‘Agent Orange’ used during the Vietnam War to clear vast swathes of potential cover for the enemy. I loved the book and especially enjoyed the very clever little twist in the tale which added an element of surprise right at the end. Highly recommended reading.

In River Bones, the 1st story, Sara is stalked by and helps catch a serial killer in California’s Sacramento River Delta. Her love interest, Huxley Keane, searches for his MIA brother.
The 2nd story, The Howling Cliffs, begins deep in the Vietnam jungle where Sara, Huxley and the veteran search team scour the area for remains of MIAs. Later, Sara goes on to solve a missing child cold case on Kauai in Hawaii. It almost costs her life.
In the third story, Dead to Life, Sara and Huxley need to find a person associated with a key found in the jungle, to confirm it belonged to Huxley’s missing brother. The key takes them on a harrowing search in Honolulu, Hawaii.
