A multi-genre author who writes seven different genres at last count.
Please, introduce yourself. Tell us about your personal life, family, education.
I’m another lost soul searching for meaning in this crazy world. I’m Canadian and I’ve been working for a local office supply company for twenty years—crazy! But I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was too young to even read. In 2015, I hit my mid-life crisis and realized I’d wasted half my life on nothing, so I began self-publishing. Now I have fifteen books and I am in many anthologies with famous authors.
What do you like doing in your spare time?
I am a sun worshiper and I spend as much time in my yard, gardening, tanning, reading and floating in the pool. During the winter months, I read and binge tv shows. I love stupid comedy, horror and some reality tv. Anything that takes my mind away from reality. Of course, during all this I write a lot too—with full-time work, there is never a dull moment.
If you are a writer, are you an avid reader?
I am a voracious reader! The worst part of writing is that it takes away from my reading time. I am one of those people you’ll see taking a book everywhere I go. Well, we no longer have to stand in line at the bank, or places to pay our bills, but I’d read in line back then. Now it’s mostly on work breaks or at home.
What inspired you to write your first book?
When I was nine or ten, I woke in the middle of the night to see two glowing red eyes staring at me. I froze, assuming my life was about to end! Only moments later to discover it was my cat’s eyes shine in the moonlight. Right then, the story came to me. I began writing it when I was nineteen and over the course of twenty-five years, from typewriter to floppy disc, to CD’s I wrote this tale. I didn’t have the internet, or help from other authors back then and the writing style is unusual. But I am proud of my first accomplishment and to be 100% organic, I’ll never rewrite it. Have you developed a specific writing style and why?
I write in seven genres, so each are written differently. I won’t get into them all. Horror I write quick, easy-to-read fun stories. I have two books in a crime series with a gay female lead. Those are tighter, in depth and, from two points of view, the detective and the killers. My Sci-fi leans into more psychological areas.
How much of your books is realistic and experiences based on someone you know, or events in your life?
At least one of all my characters has pieces of me in them. I have characters based on friends and co-workers. And I try to keep my characters as realistic as possible. For example, my detective is an average sized woman. She is not superhuman and most of the time needs help from those around her. Some of my settings are in actual cities and I use google maps and walk the areas I’m writing about to keep that real too.
When you see new authors struggling, what single piece of advice could you give them on a moment’s notice?
If you’re reading this and are an aspiring (anything), take my advice and go for it! Do what you love because life is too short. Relax. Writing is art, and it’s yours. Do whatever makes you feel good and right, and no one can take that away from you.
